William Sutton   Black Watch

EXCITING ENCOUNTER WITH THE GERMANS.

Private William Sutton, of the 1st Black Watch, tells in simple but stirring language how he received his injury.  In a letter to his mother, who resides at 191 Lochee Road, Dundee, the Private, who is in hospital in Manchester, says—“I suppose you have heard all about the big battle that was fought on Sunday, 9th May.  We made a charge with fixed bayonets.  I got well into the German trench, and I had the pleasure of killing two of them.  One I believe he stood about six feet, meant to stick his bayonet into me, but I took hold of it.  He pulled the trigger and shot me.  The bullet went in at my wrist and came out at my finger.  I am getting on well.”   Private Sutton, who is 21 years of age, has served fully three years in the army.
