William initially enlisted as a private, 48032, with the Royal Fusiliers in December 1914 and was initially posted to the 23rd Battalion. He was wounded in action 27.07.1916 and a short while later was appointed to Lance Corporal 21.09.1916. He was awarded the Military Medal 21.10.1916 and was wounded for a second time 13.11.1916. Following his recovery from his wounds, he was posted to the 5th battalion 22.01.1917 before being discharged for a commission 28.09.1917 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers being posted initially to the 11th battalion before being transferred to the 7th battalion, he was serving with them when he was killed in action.
