William was the brother of Pte Hugh Samson, 20006, 6/7th Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, who died of wounds, 15.10.1916 and Cpl David Ramsay Samson, 78511, Tank Corps who also returned home safely.
William initially served as a Pte with the Highland Light Infantry before being transferred to the R.A.S.C.
