RIFLE SAVES PRIVATE
WHO IS WOUNDED IN STOMACH BY SHRAPNEL.
Private William Lawson, whose home is at 3 Walton Street, Dundee, has had a miraculous escape. His rifle saved his life.
Private Lawson is at present lying in hospital in Brighton suffering from a shrapnel wound in the stomach. Writing to his mother he says :―”I was wounded at Neuve Chapelle on the day of the great battle. A German shrapnel happened to come my way, and I got it in the stomach. But it hit my rifle first, which saved me. So I am lucky. All the boys were cheery when I left.”
Private Lawson, who is 21years of age, has been in the “Fourth” about a year. He was previously employed as a blacksmith at Ninewells.
