More about William Kinnon
William Kinnon was born in Dundee and, before he joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in 1897, was employed as a Boot Finisher. He left the Royal Navy in 1909 but was entered into the Royal Fleet Reserve. In August 1914 he was called up and served in the Royal Naval Division with the additional Service Number RFR/B/6086. He was drafted to the Howe Battalion in mid September 1914 and would have served at Antwerp. He sailed with the Howe Battalion to the Middle East at the end of February 1915 and landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula shortly after the Allied landings on 25 April. The Howe Battalion took its position in the front line and fought in the Second and Third Battles of Krithia. It was in the last attack that William Kinnon was killed in action. He was listed as missing but his death was accepted in July 1916. His next of kin was noted as Elizabeth McVie (possibly McKay) of 7 Roxburgh Street, Edinburgh. His name is recorded on the Helles Memorial on Gallipoli.
