In October 1906 he joined the Royal Navy on a Special Service Engagement of seven years giving his place of birth as Dundee and his employment as a Textile Worker. His Service Number was SS1675. In November 1909 he transferred to a Continuous Service Engagement with a new Service Number of J5946.
