DUNDEE SOLDIER WINS MILITARY CROSS.
In the list of awards of the Military Cross published in yesterday’s “Courier” there appeared the name of Company-Sergeant-Major William Aitken, a Dundee man.
C.S.M. Aitken has been awarded the decoration for conspicuous gallantry during operations. At one time C.S.M. Aitken served in the Cameron Highlanders for a period of twenty-one years. He saw service in the Soudan, for which he holds the two service medals, and the Boer War, for which he holds the Queen’s and King’s Service Medals. The gallant soldier was mentioned in the despatches during the latter campaign for bravery. He is also the possessor of the long service and good conduct medal. Although his term of service had expired, C.S.M. Aitken enlisted in a Kitchener’s Battalion of his old regiment about two months after the outbreak of the present war. He has been in the firing line since August of last year. C.S.M. Aitken was prior to rejoining employed as a commissionaire by Messrs George Duncan & Co., jute merchants, Dundee. His wife resides at 2 Kinnaird Street Dundee.
