Walter Binny MM   27044 Canadian Infantry

DUNDEE CANADIAN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED.

Many of his friends in Dundee will learn with regret that Scout-Sergeant Walter Binny, son of the late Mr James Binny Riverview, Dundee, has been seriously wounded in France.

Sergeant Binny left Dundee for Canada over thirteen years ago and has had an eventful career in the land of his adoption. Klondyke drew him, and for three years he engaged in prospecting in the west.

On the outbreak of war Sergeant Binny was among the first of the Scots in the Dominion to respond to the call of the Mother Country.  He was attached to the 48th Canadian Highlanders 15th Battalion (the Ontario Regiment), and came over with the First Canadian Contingent.  At Ypres he formed one of the heroic band who received the first dose of German gas.

Only recently he was recommended for mention for a brave action in saving an officer’s life.  Sergeant Binny, in face of a heavy shell and bomb fire, went out in broad daylight and brought the officer from the front of the German trenches.  As one of his officers put it after the sergeant was wounded, “He has left one of the finest records in France, and is an example to all,” while one of his comrades exclaimed “If there ever was a big-hearted fellow, Walter’s it.”  A younger brother, Sergeant James Binny is also a member of the Canadian Contingent, being attached to the machine gun company of the 1st Battalion the Eastern Ontario Regiment.
