More about Thomas Boland

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour. This is also no record of him in the C.W.G.C. records. He was the brother of Pte Patrick Boland 10205, 1st Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers, who was killed in action 26.04.1915.

Thomas Boland was the second eldest son of Mr William and Mrs Annie Boland of 33 Whorterbank, Lochee, Dundee. He died in Dundee from pneumonia during demobilisation leave. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve in Dundee on 19 Oct 1911 and was called up on the outbreak of war in August 1914. Thomas Boland served in several ships and auxiliaries which operating out of the Royal Navy Base in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. For some reason he deserted from the base in December 1916 but surrendered to the Police in Glasgow after a few weeks. After a period of 42 days in detention he continued to serve and became a member of a Defensively Armed Merchant Ship (DAMS) gun’s crew which would be moved from one merchant ship to another as required to defend it against German U-Boat surface attack. He was advanced to Acting Leading Seaman in December 1918.
