More about Robert Pryde

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour but is remembered on the Monifieth War Memorial.

Robert Pryde   110794   Royal Garrison Artillery

MONIFIETH MAN FALLS IN ACTION.

Still another Monifieth man has laid down his life for his country at the front.  On Wednesday morning Mrs R. Pryde, Well Street, received information that her husband, Gunner Robert Pryde, Royal Garrison Artillery, was killed in action on Tuesday 24th July.  His officer writes― “It is with extreme regret that I have to inform you that your husband was killed on the evening of 24th July.  Death was absolutely instantaneous, he could not even have realised that he was hit.  I can only offer you my deepest sympathy―and trust that Providence will in time soften the blow.  I feel for you the more in that he was my batman in December last, and volunteered to come with me here when I was transferred (from Black Watch).  He was the best man I had―brave, cheerful, and always willing, and as true as steel.  To me he was more friend than servant.  We buried him the following morning in a military cemetery away back, a squad of men with myself witnessing the last rites.”

Deceased, who is well known in Monifieth, joined the R.O.A. about a year ago, and has been at the front for over six months.  He was for a long period barman at the Royal Hotel, Monifieth, acting in a similar capacity with Mr James K. Doig, Castle Street, Dundee, when called to the colours.
