For reasons unknown Robert is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.
Robert initially enlisted in the Highland Cyclist Battalion where he was employed on clerical work before being given Corporals rank and he then joined the ranks as he was anxious to go to France. He Left with his Company on 23 July 1916 and on arrival in France was transferred to the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, serving in ‘C’ Company up to the date of his being reported missing on 9 May 1917 at the Battle of Oppy wood.
