More about Robert Hynd
My Grandfather was Robert Hynd. He was born on 5th November 1895 at 45 Derby Street Dundee. His parents were Robert Ford Hynd and Elizabeth Philp who had married in 1891. Robert had 2 sisters Elizabeth who was born 2 May 1892 and Edith who was born 28 February 1904. At the Census for 1901 they were living at 31 Hill Street but by 1911 they have moved to 56 Main Street Dundee. Robert (Bob) joined the Post office as an assistant postman in December 1911. He became a postman in March 1914 and returned to that profession in March 1919 when he was discharged from army service.
He married Maggie Stuart on 18th July 1919 and had 4 children Robert (Bob) joined the Scottish Horse on 18th August 1915 and served in Gallipoli and Egypt. The Scottish Horse became the 13th Battalion The Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) on 29th September 1916 and soon after this they served in Greece on the Salonika Front and remained there until June 1918. While serving in Greece many of the soldiers were wounded or suffered from malaria and when they were moved to France where they served on the Western Front many of them could no longer serve in a Service Battalion due to their medical grade and were posted to a labour battalion within their own regiment.
His parents Robert & Elizabeth had survived both wars and buried their 3 children, Elizabeth on 28 August 1916, Edith on 25th May 1928 and finally Bob on 28th October 1945. They are buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Dundee Robert Ford Hynd and Elizabeth died with 6 months of each other in 1951. By this time they were living in Wedderburn Street.
