More about Harry McDougall

Harry was the brother of L/Cpl John McDougal, D.C.M. S/43397, Black Watch.

As an aside on Harry, he was a Pte in the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps, 2744825, in WW2.  He was lost on the SS Lancastria which sank on 17 June 1940 during Operation Ariel.  The ship was bombed by the Germans near the French port of St.Nazaire with the loss of 4,000 men, women and children.  Fewer than 2,500 survived.  It’s the largest loss of life in British Maritime history.  Not much was known at the time of its sinking as all attention was focussed on Dunkirk.
