More about John Thomas Tozer
For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour but is remembered on the Trinity Church, Dundee, Roll of Honour, which is now located in the Ward Chapel Church, Dundee.
For more information on John, visit his Service Record and Canadian Memorial.
John shares a final resting place with Sapper Albert Edward Cornwell, 159868, ‘E’ Special Company, Royal Engineers, who died of wounds, 02.10.1918.
Firstly, the reason this John Thomas Tozer (16 Jan 1895 – 2 Oct 1918) is not on the original Dundee Roll may be because it was *his father*, another John Thomas Tozer, whose military service is strongly linked to Dundee, via the RA & TA. This John is my great great grandfather.
John b. 1895 (he lied about his age when he joined the CFA) emigrated to Winnipeg with his mother, Elizabeth, & youngest sister, Winifred, following the suicide of his father John on 12 Jan 1911 – in the armoury of the TA Hall at 9 Douglas Street.
John senior was born in Exeter 17 Dec 1857 & joined the RA in 1877. He was posted to Dundee and married Elizabeth Graham there on 23 Dec 1878. He served in India & the Boer War, returning to Dundee in 1901 & staying with the RA & TA. He was also the caretaker of the Drill Hall. Interestingly, a newspaper report of the suicide hinted at PTSD, years before such things were known about.
John junior (“Jack”) was a trumpeter in 2nd Highland Brigade before emigrating.
My great grandfather was William Tozer, who also served in the RFA during WW1.
