More about John Smith Gray

John S Gray was born in Broughty Ferry in 1881. He was the son of Elizabeth Roy Gray, 75 College Street, Aberdeen and the late James Morrison Gray. The Barley Rig had sailed from Blyth to fish for herring when she struck a German mine. Much of the bow and the bottom of the ship was blown off and the drifter sank within two minutes. Five crew were lost including the skipper and his son. Four brothers with the surname Clarke survived and were picked up by the trawler along with the body of the Engineer. John Gray is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
