More about John McKelvie
John McKelvie was born in Dundee and was serving a Fireman and Trimmer onboard the SS Zinal of London in 1914 and gave his address as 69 Sebring Street, Brooklyn, New York. He left that ship in New York in December 1914. The SS Baku Standard was an oil tanker requisitioned by the Royal Navy as a Royal Fleet Auxiliary in 1914 and she was torpedoed and sunk by the German Submarine UC-58 six miles south of Stonehaven while on passage from Greenock to the Firth of Forth and with the loss of 24 crew. John McKelvie is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
