John has no known grave but is remembered on the Vimy Memorial. He was the brother of Pte Alexander McDonald Smith 163684, of the 2nd Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps and Pte Hector McDonald Smith 24997, 208th Battalion who was discharged as being underage. John listed a Mrs Jessie Smith of 132 Lochee Rd, Dundee as his next of kin when he enlisted.
