John initially attested with the 101st Battalion, Canadian Infantry on the 7 December 1915 and was placed in ‘A’ Company. He later served with the 16th Battalion, and whilst serving with them he received multiple wounds to his left arm and right leg, while on a night working party at Fresnoy. He was invalided back to England and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham. Following treatment for his injuries he was then posted to the 14th Reserve Battalion and finished the war serving with the Canadian Forestry Corps at Carlisle.
He returned to Canada 13.01.1919 aboard the S.S. Empress of Britain and was finally demobilized at Winnipeg 21.02.1919.
John was the brother of Robert Mackenzie, 24060, 2nd Bn Royal Scots Fusiliers who died from wounds 10.04.1918
