More about John Gardiner Fairweather

John originally lived in Broughty Ferry before emigrating to New York, USA, sailing from Glasgow in October 1911. He lived and worked in America before returning to U.K. and enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 23 August 1915. He initially served with the 128th Siege Battery in Salonika. It is believed that he was then invalided back to Britain on board the “Dover Castle” returning via Malta, to Marseilles then back up through France via Lyon then over to England.

Following his recovery he was returned back to the front, sailing from Southampton to Le Harve. He then fought in various actions in France where he was gassed. He was invalided back home were he was admitted to the Dundee War Hospital, 01.05.1918 suffering from the effects of gas. He was discharged 2 weeks later on 15.05.1918 (his entry in the hospital register lists his Regiment as Royal Garrison Artillery 153rd Siege Battery.

Following the end of the War John was employed as a Caretaker at Harris Academy, Dundee.
