John Downie Mudie   200 Australian Tunnelling Corps

Official information has been received that Corporal John Downie Mudie, Australian Imperial Force, was killed in action on the 14th November.  He enlisted in October, 1915, and went to the front in May last.  He was the son of Mr Mudie, North Bank of Gray, Backmuir of Liff, Dundee.  He was thirty years of age.  Prior to emigrating to Australia five and a half years ago he was in the employment of Dundee City Tramways.  His two brothers, George and Millar Mudie, are both serving their country.  Millar Mudie was wounded in July last.

The chaplain, writing of Corporal Mudie’s death says :__”He was loved and respected by all.  His was a hero’s death, and his life has been given to save us from the worst of all deaths, that of living in a conquered country.”

A comrade, writing to his mother, says:__” He was always a favourite with the boys, and was always doing something for them, and when he met his death, it was in an endeavour to save the lives of others who had been buried alive previously.  He was killed instantaneously.”
