Dundee Canadian Killed.
A well-known Dundee Canadian, who was at one time a conspicuous figure in Dundee athletic circles, has been killed at the front. He is Private James Stewart, of the Canadian Infantry, having enlisted at Alsask, Sask., shortly after the outbreak of the war. For over 14 months he had been at the front, and made the supreme sacrifice on 26th September. He was 28 years of age, and was the son of the late Mr John Stewart, compositor. After being educated in Blackness School and Harris Academy he adopted banking as a profession, having been employed in the King Street and Westport branches of the Royal Bank, Dundee, and on his emigrating he went into the Union Bank of Canada. Private James Stewart was a splendid athlete, and distinguished himself both as a footballer and cricketer, having played for various junior Football Clubs in Dundee. He was a highly-esteemed member of the Walton C.C. He was a brother-in-law to Mr Harry Blackwood, M.A., second master of Bathgate Academy.

There is a reference to James in the Dundee Peoples Journal 21/10/1916 page 14, available in Dundee Central Library

For reasons unknown James Stewart is not included on the original Dundee City Roll of Honour
