More about James Roberts Mcleod

Formerly, 16959, 56th TR.

James was on board the S.S. Slieve Bloom when on March 30th, 1918, the American destroyer U.S.S. Stockton collided with the British cargo SS Slieve Bloom, near the South Stack Lighthouse. U.S.S. Stockton had to put into Liverpool for repairs, but Slieve Bloom sank. Slieve Bloom was on voyage from Dublin to Holyhead with 370 cattle, 12 horses, general goods and railway rolling stock.

James R McLeod was the son of Mr David and Mrs Jemima Roberts McLeod of Kirkton of Auchterhouse, Dundee. He was serving in the Third Battalion, Kings Own Scottish Borderers and was on passage from Dublin to Liverpool when the Slieve Bloom, an Irish Sea ferry, was struck by the American destroyer USS Stockton in the darkness. The Slieve Bloom began to sink and the passengers and crew took to the lifeboats. All were saved except James McLeod and it is though that he was sleeping in a cabin close to the point of impact. The Slieve Bloom sank close to Angelsey. James McLeod is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton.
