WOUNDED WHILE SEEING TO CHUM’S SAFETY.
While seeing to the safety of a wounded comrade, Private Jas. Mooney, 1st A. and S.H., a Dundee man was wounded by shrapnel on the left arm on 13th May.
Private Mooney in a letter to his mother, 56 Coupar Street, Lochee, says :―“The Germans started shelling us as soon as daylight came in. I was lying beside my chum, John Craig, when he was wounded by shrapnel in three places. A lot of my company were killed and wounded. I volunteered to put my chum on my back and carry him to safety, for we knew if we stayed where we were we would have been killed. The shells were bursting all over us as I got him on my back. I carried him 200 yards to the cellar of an old house, and then went back to the post. A man was struck by shrapnel close to me, and when I got to him he was dead. On going back to my chum I was struck by shrapnel on the left arm.”
Private Mooney is 32 years of age, and was previously two and a half years in the “Argylls,” re-enlisting on the outbreak of war. The parents of Private John Craig, to whom he refers reside in Cobden Street, Lochee. Private Craig served alongside Mooney during the latter’s previous military career, and both chums re-enlisted together.
