James Menzies was the son of Mr John and Mrs Jean Menzies (nee Fraser) and was married to Mrs Agnes Menzies (nee Taylor) of Gowanlea , Durham Street, Monifieth. He was born in Logiealmond, Perthshire but gave his place of birth as Dundee in the 1915 Crew Lists. He had been the Chief Engineer onboard the Ptarmigan since 1914. She was sunk on 15 April 1915 by torpedo fired by the German submarine UB-5 approximately 6 miles North West of the North Hinder Light Vessel off the Dutch coast. She was en route from Rotterdam to London with a general cargo. Eight of her crew died in the sinking and James Menzies is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
