More about James Mechie

James Mechie was the son of Mr Andrew and Mrs Jessie Mechie of 23 Muirhall Terrace, Perth and was born in Perth. He was a Civil Engineer and gained a BSc Honours at the University College Dundee. In September 1914 he enlisted into the Royal Marines in London as a Sapper for service in the Royal Naval Division’s Engineer Company. After training at the Recruit Depot at Deal in Kent he sailed with the bulk of the Royal Naval Division to the Eastern Mediterranean in late February 1915. The RND landed on Gallipoli in late April and took part in the Second and Third Krithia battles in May and June as well as manning the front line. In July he became ill with Enteric Fever and died onboard the Hospital Ship Soudan whilst on passage from Mudros on the island of Lemnos to Alexandria in Egypt. James Michie was buried at sea and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent.
