More about James McGregor

James McGregor was the son of Captain Peter McGregor of Dundee. In 1915 he served as the Mate onboard the Swansea registered foreign going cargo ship Mokta and gave his age as 47. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve in December 1916 and was appointed to HMS Djerissa, a Q Ship used to decoy U-Boats into surface attacks. In common with other Q ships her name was changed to Mallina and, in a non Q Ship role, was used to transfer personnel and provisions to HMS Bacchante in Sierra Leone in October 1917. James McGregor became ill with Malaria in February 1918 and was evacuated to Plymouth in March onboard the Annandale Castle. In March he was found to be unfit for further service. James McGregor died in the Aberdeen Infirmary from Cerebral Thrombosis and is buried in the Nellfield Cemetery, Aberdeen grave reference 2/1630. The National Archives RNR Officers record spells his name as MacGregor. A note dated 3/17 in that RNR record shows that he was married to Mrs M McGregor, 104 Kinfauns Road, Goodmayes, Essex. The record does not give a date of birth but the 1915 Crew List gives the Goodmayes address and age 47.
