Brother of Walter James Binny (Service No. 27044), M.M. & M.I.D. 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry
James Binny originally enlisted as a Private in the 1st Battalion Canadian Infantry (Service No. 6428). He was wounded three times! The first time May 24, 1915 with a GSW to the side. The second time was in Sept of 1915 with a wound to the shoulder. Binny was promoted to Sgt in 1916 and made a Temp. Lieut shortly thereafter. His third GSW came in early 1917 when he was hit in the knee.
In late 1917, Binny relinquished his rank of Lieutenant to join the Royal Naval Air Service as Pilot Officer and trained as a pilot in 1918. He flew but not operationally as his nerves were in a fragile state following three years (and three wounds in the Infantry). Binny was sent home Canada.
