More about William Hannaford

Although William was born in Edinburgh he is listed on Dundee’s original Honour Roll. He was awarded the D.C.M. ON 17 May, 1917. Citation ” For conspicuous gallantry during a raid on the enemies trenches, he handled his men with great skill and succeeded in capturing 23 prisoners. He is a splendid example of courage and initiative”.

He was later awarded the Military Medal on 12 September 1917 and a bar to the Military Medal on 11 November 1918.

“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemies trenches he oped fire with his machine gun on two parties of the enemy, thereby securing the successful withdrawal of his own party at a critical time.”
