More about George Webster MacFarlane
George W MacFarlane was born in Strathmartine, Dundee and was the son of Mr Alexander and Mrs Devina MacFarlane later of Stirling. He was the husband of Mrs Violet H MacFarlane, 57 St George’s Square, Portsmouth and The Bell Inn, West Cowes, Isle of Wight. He joined the Royal Navy in 1894 and trained onboard HMS Impregnable, Ganges and Caledonia. During his career he served onboard several HM Ships including Tourmaline, Acteon, Duke of Wellington, Arethusa and Royal Arthur. In 1911 he transferred to the submarine service. HM Submarine E3 was sunk by the German submarine U-27 in Ems Bay, Germany in the first sinking of one submarine by another. George MacFarlane is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common, Hampshire.
