More about George Nicoll

George Nicoll was the son of Mr and Mrs James Nicoll of 70 Peddie Street, Dundee. His home address was 5138 Funston Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and he worked as a Clerk. In May 1915 he was travelling on the Cunard ship RMS Lusitania on passage from New York to Liverpool when the German Submarine U-20 fired torpedoes as the liner passed near Kinsale Head on the South East Coast of Ireland. Almost 1200 passengers and crew were lost and just over 700 were saved. The ensuing world outrage stopped the German Navy from sinking merchant ships without warning until 1917.
