More about George Millar Reid

service record

During WW1, George was wounded and captured in 1916 and spent the remainder of the war as a Prisoner of War. The photograph which shows George Millar Reid standing in the centre, with two men on either side, is believed to have been taken while he was in a POW camp. Interestingly, he is still wearing his Army uniform and kilt while the other two soldiers appear to be wearing a POW uniform.
After returning from the war, George Millar Reid worked as a railway signalman, based at Newtyle and later at Laurencekirk. At some stage during his retirement he moved to Birkhill and was there until his death on 7th February 1959. He died of a heart attack. His wife had a stroke around the same time and died a few days later and neither knew the other had died which was a blessing as they were a very close couple.
According to official records, George was held as a P.O.W. at Wittenberg Camp in Germany. Fore more information on Wittenberg Camp, see here.
