More about George Marnie
George Marnie was born in Montrose and was the son of Mr George and Mrs Isabella Marnie of Montrose and he was the husband of Mrs Agnes Marnie of 14 Macdonald Street in Methil, of 178 High Street, Methil and later at Fairview Cottage, North Street, Peterhead. He and James Marnie are listed in the Dundee City Roll of Honour as both being crew members of HMS Bulwark. His record does not show that he served onboard the Bulwark nor is he listed among the nine survivors of the explosion which destroyed the battleship in November 1914. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve at Methil in July 1915 and was initially based in Portsmouth at the Naval Barracks and then HMS Vernon. In April 1916 he was drafted to Motor Launch 83, a patrol boat. ML83 was based in the Cromarty Firth and was a tender to HMS Thalia, a cruiser converted to a Depot Ship. George Marnie was drowned in the North Harbour, Peterhead and is buried at the Sleepy Hillock Cemetery, Montrose, Angus. The Naval History Net reports that he died from illness but this is incorrect and both his RNR Record and Deaths at Sea state that he drowned.
