More about Dudley Stuart

Dudley Stuart was the son of Commander Dudley Charles Stuart RN, late of Lundie, Angus. He joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1899 and was trained onboard the old wooden battleships Britannia and Hindustan moored in the River Dart in Devon. As a Midshipman he served in six warships of different sizes and, after passing his Midshipman’s Examination Board, volunteered for service in Destroyers and Torpedo Boats. He was appointed to his first Command in 1910, the old destroyer HMS Shark. On the outbreak of war he was serving in the Armoured Cruiser HMS Warrior until April 1915 when he was appointed to the Downs Boarding Flotilla. In January 1916 he was appointed in command of the destroyer HMS Moy and, in May, the destroyer HMS Turbulent. The Turbulent was lost during the Battle of Jutland night action on 1 June 1916 after being rammed by a German Battleship, possibly SMS Westfalen. Dudley Stuart is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common, Hampshire. For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.

Dudley has no known grave but is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial. He was serving aboard H.M.S. Turbulent a Destroyer launched January 1916. She was sunk by German Battleship, SMS Westfalen during the early hours of 1st June 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. Only 13 survived from a crew of 109, these survivors were interned as prisoners of war.
