More about James Gibson Swinton
James, son of Mr Andrew L Swinton, Headmaster, Ann Street School, Dundee, saw much hard service in Gallipoli (including the Sulva Bay landing) and Egypt before he was presumed killed in France. A brother officer wrote: “The last time I saw him he was in a shell hole nest to me in front of Loupart Wood. About this time it was reported that the Germans had broken through and were surrounding us. The men on our right ‘gave way’, but he refused too retire, and expressed his determination to hold out to the last.”
