More about Robert Coull
Robert Coull was the son of Mr William Coull of Ferryden, Montrose and was married to Mrs Joan Knight Coull of 98 King Street, Broughty Ferry. He was a member of the Mercantile Marine Reserve made up of Merchant Seamen who accepted service under the Naval Discipline Act. HM Trawler Columba was sunk by mine laid by the German submarine UC-40 off May Island, Firth of Forth when she was on tow from Dundee to Rosyth although some reports state that Granton was the destination and five crew were lost in the explosion. Robert Coull’s body was recovered and he is buried in the Barnhill Cemetery, Broughty Ferry. His Death Scroll and Death Plaque are held by the McManus Galleries. His name is also on the St James Church Memorial, Broughty Ferry which records his service as Boom
