More about Cecilia Burns
Mrs Cecilia Burns was the wife of Mr Thomas Burns and their Dundee address was 8 Constitution Street. The SS Persia was a P and O Liner on passage from Britain to India when she was torpedoed without warning by the German submarine U-38 at midday on 30 December 1915, south of the island of Crete. Only four of the eight lifeboats could be lowered because of the immediate list and the survivors were not rescued until the following evening. Over 340 drowned out of over 500 passengers and crew onboard. Mr Burns was the manager of Khardah Mill in Calcutta. A Memorial Service was held in Calcutta on 28 Feb 1916.
