More about Allan John Anderson
John Anderson was the son of Jessie Anderson, nee Ferguson, of 3 Baffin Street, Dundee. In 1914 and early 1915 he was the Fifth Engineer of the Aros Castle and then joined the Llandovery Castle in June as Fifth Engineer. In 1918 the Llandovery Castle was a Hospital Ship which was torpedoed in the Irish Sea by the German submarine U-86. The survivors of the sinking were allegedly machine gunned and run down by the submarine’s crew. Two hundred and thirty four men and women died and only twenty four people were picked up. John Anderson is named on the Tower Hill Memorial in London. The U-Boat Captain survived the war and was arraigned for war crimes in 1921 but disappeared without trace before the trial.
