3-3748 Sgt. Alexander Cumming, 9th Black Watch, was killed in action on 25 September 1915, aged 40. A veteran soldier, Cumming had served in India and South Africa with the 2nd Battalion.
He left a widow and five children.
WIDOW AND FIVE OF A FAMILY MOURN LOSS OF VETERAN MONIFIETH SOLDIER. A Monifieth soldier who saw active service on the Indian frontier and in the South African War has been killed in action. He is Sergt. Alex. Cumming, 9th Black Watch, and his wife, who resides in Glasgow, has received official intimation of his death. Sergeant Cumming, whose parents reside at 60 Kemback St., Dundee, was born at The Milton, Monifieth. He would have attained his forty-first birthday next month. He served eight years with the 2nd Black Watch, and fought on the Indian frontier and in the South African campaign, for which he was awarded two medals. His period as a reservist having expired, Sergeant Cumming enlisted in the 9th Black Watch about a year ago. He is survived by a widow and five of a family.
