More about J. A. Hutcheson

  1. A. Hutcheson D.C.M.  31340   Royal Engineers

DUNDEE MAN AWARDED THE D.C.M.

At Queen’s Barracks, Perth, on Saturday, Mr J. A. Hutcheson, Moy Villa, Frederick Street, Downfield, was presented with the D.C.M. at a parade of troops.  Mr Hutcheson enlisted in the 3rd K.O.S.B., was transferred to the Tank Corps as a machine gunner, and afterwards transferred to the R.E. Signals (attached 1st Brigade Tanks).

From the second battle of Ypres up to the armistice, by continuous bravery in keeping up telephone communication under heavy enemy shell-fire, he was duly merited the high honour bestowed upon him.  While repairing cables the gallant sapper has had many narrow escapes, a shell on one occasion hitting a tank and disabling it, while he was knocked down by the concussion.  While he was effecting repairs in Candry one night a shell struck a house and dislodged tons of masonry, which fell at his feet, but he never got a scratch.
