He joined the Royal Navy as Cadet onboard the wooden line-of-battleship HMS Britannia, moored in the River Dart in Devon in 1905. From 1909 he served at sea in HM Ships King Edward VII, Zulu, Cochrane, Bellerophon and Commonwealth. In February 1914 he transferred to the submarine service at HMS Dolphin and was appointed to HMS Vulcan, the submarine depot in Dundee in June 1914. After further experience he was appointed to HM Submarine E26 based at HMS Dolphin in Gosport, Hampshire. In July 1916 E26 was operating off the estuary of the Ems River, Germany when the submarine was attacked by German forces. Both gunfire and bombs were used and E26 did not return from her patrol. The crew of 31 were all lost and the wreck was found in 2006. Harold Atkin-Berry is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial on Southsea Common, Hampshire.
