Andrew I Anderson was the son of Mr James Anderson and Mrs Margaret Smith Anderson of 109 Talbot Road, South Shields but was born in Dundee. The SS Sowwell was sunk by torpedo fired by the German submarine U-35 approximately 170 miles South west of Gibraltar. She was en route from Sagunto to Glasgow with a cargo of iron ore and twenty crew died in the sinking. Andrew Anderson is named on the Tower Hill Memorial in London.
