WOUNDED DUNDEE BLACK WATCH PRIVATE
Tells of Severe Losses to Regiment.
“The casualties were something terrible―even worse than Neuve Chapelle of 10th March.”
This statement regarding his regiment’s doings in the heavy fighting of last Sunday is given in a letter to his parents who reside at 339 Loons Road, Dundee, by Private Albert Scott, of 2d Black Watch, who was wounded by shrapnel on both hands in a charge.
“The 1st Seaforths were the first to charge” he says, “but were mowed down by machine-guns and had to retire. We then charged along with the Ghurkas, but also had to retire. We made another charge, however, and captured a wood occupied by the Germans on our left, and set it on fire. We afterwards captured their first trench. It was terrible―proper murder. Our commanding officer, adjutant, and the captain of my company were killed.”
Only eighteen years of age Private Scott joined the Black Watch in November, and was previously employed as a grocer in the city.
