John D. Chalmers 2Lt Royal Artillery
DUNDEE MAN’S SACRIFACE TO JOIN ARMY.
RESIGNS LUCRATIVE POSITION AND TRAVELS OVER 10,000 MILES.
Mr John D. Chalmers, engineer and tea planter, eldest son of Mr John Chalmers, 266 Blackness Road, Dundee, has just been gazetted second-lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.
At the end of last year he resigned a very lucrative position in North Assam, India, being resident manager on Chillidhary Tea Estate, belonging to Messrs A. Yule & Co., Calcutta. He travelled over 10,000 miles, and joined the Royal Artillery as a gunner. In India, where he was stationed for over nine years, he was attached to the Assam Valley Light Horse, of which regiment he was one of the crack shots.
His younger brother, William, was appointed lieutenant-engineer in the Royal Indian Marine three months ago, and is now in charge of a gunboat.
Mr Chalmers only other son, David, is second engineer on a Government transport somewhere in the North Sea.
All three young men served their respective apprenticeships in Blackness Foundry, Dundee.
