TRAGIC INCIDENT ON BATTLEFIELD.

Private Stewart Darling of the 1st Cameron Highlanders owes his life to a bandolier.  A bullet which went through his arm was making straight for his heart, when it embedded in the cartridge belt.

Private Darling who resides at 8 Peddie Street, Dundee, came home yesterday on ten days’ furlough.  “It was terrible,” he said, “lying in the trenches at the Aisne a night for three weeks with nothing but ‘Jack Johnsons’ flying over ones head.  “At the Aisne the whole of our division charged a windmill in which were a large number of Germans.  We took 350 prisoners, while our casualties were only about 100.

“One incident occurred which I shall not forget.  One of our officers was chaffing one of the men about his beard, when he was shot through the brain,”

It was on November 1, at Ypres, that Private Darling was wounded.  The division was engaged in holding back the German guns until the artillery could get into position, when he received a bullet through the left forearm, which found a billet in his bandolier, and thus his life was saved.

CASUALTIES AMONG THREE DUNDEE BROTHERS.

Mrs Darling, 8 Peddie Street, Dundee, has three sons in the army, and one of them has been wounded, another gassed, and the third she has not had any word from for five weeks.

Private Stewart Darling (20) is in the Cameron Highlanders.  He was wounded in the arm at the battle of Ypres in September, and is now stationed in the North of Scotland.  He has also been three years with his regiment.
