DUNDEE MAN’S PLUCKY ACTION

WINS PROMOTION AND HONOUR.

An act of extraordinary pluck and skill at a time of great danger on the part of Mr A. D. Buchan, a Dundee man, has been justly rewarded.  Mr Buchan, whose wife and child reside at Watt Street, Dundee, joined the navy over two years ago, and entered the signalling section of the service.

One stormy night Mr Buchan’s ship was at anchor along with others when a terrible catastrophe occurred.  The ship broke from its moorings, and the whole position was fraught with serious consequences.  Mr Buchan, however, sprang to the wheel, and giving the necessary signals to the engineers, guided the ship clear of all danger, thereby saving many lives and several ships.  Mr Buchan’s splendid achievement has gained for him, on the personal recommendation of Admiral Beatty, a sub-lieutenancy and Distinguished Service Medal.

Before entering the navy, Sub-Lieutenant Buchan was a commercial traveller, and was an enthusiastic member of the local branch of the Scottish Traveller’s Association.  His parents are resident in the city, his father being chauffeur to Dr Laing.
