Francis is believed to be the brother of Pte James Cooney, 2745377, Black Watch.

“WE PLAYED A FINE PART.”
LOCHEE “FOURTH” PRIVATE WOUNDED.
The parents of Private F. Coonie, (Cooney) of the 4th Black Watch, who resides at 14 Marybank Lane, Lochee, have received a letter from him stating that he was wounded by shrapnel in the shoulder on Sunday, 9th May. The letter was written in hospital, and reads,–“I have been admitted to hospital with a shrapnel wound in the shoulder, but it won’t be long until it is better. There were quite a lot of our lads killed and wounded, but we played a fine part to the last.” Private Coonie who is 19 years of age, has served three years in the 4th Black Watch, and previous to the outbreak of war was employed as a calender worker.
