The family also went by the name of Whannell. William was the brother of Pte Alexander MacWhannell, 1346, 2nd Battalion Black Watch, who was killed in action 07.01.1916 and Pte Thomas MacWhannell, 39434, 16th Battalion Royal Scots, who was taken prisoner but returned home safely.
