Thomas initially attested and served with the 159th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, reaching the rank of Sergeant. he was struck off strength, 17.09.1917, for a commission as Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, Black Watch.
He was the brother of Lieutenant Robert Brown, 3rd Divisional Signal Company, who died 05.09.1919 (suicide)

DUNDEE OFFICER WINS MILITARY CROSS.
Second-Lieut. Thomas Brodie Brown, Black Watch, younger son of Mr and Mrs Robert Brown, 22 Baldovan Terrace, Dundee, has been awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in an engagement at Moslains in September last. Prior to the outbreak of war Lieut. Brown was in Canada. He came over with the Canadians, and after 2½ years’ service he was commissioned in the Black Watch, being attached to the14th (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry) Battalion. Before going to Canada, the gallant officer was a law apprentice in the city.
