James Minto Hood Lieutenant Inland Water Transport
DUNDEE OFFICER DIES ON WAY HOME
To Be Demobilised.
After Good War Services in the East.
News has been received by his parents, who reside in Hermon Hill, Dundee, of the sudden death of Lieut. James M. Hood, Inland Water Transport. After over three years valuable service in Mesopotamia, Lieut. Hood has succumbed to pneumonia while on his way home to be demobilised. He was instrumental for the successful conveyance of General Maude and his Staff to Bagdad at the time of its fall. On that occasion he was mentioned in despatches for repairing an engine breakdown whilst under fire on the Tigris, and so enabling the General to keep in touch with the enemy.
Prior to his army service Lieut. Hood was a marine engineer, and in 1915, while on his way from a port in Greece, his ship was torpedoed in the Mediterranean, the crew having to take to the boats, but were eventually rescued by an Australian troopship. His death will be much regretted in Boys’ Brigade circles, he being ex-captain of the 4th Dundee Company and an indefatigable worker in that organisation.
