More about James Stewart

For reasons unknown this man is not listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour.

James Stewart was born in Buckie on 2 July 1885, the son of William and Isbella Stewart. He was educated in Dundee where he attended Blackness School and Harris Academy, before entering the Royal Bank of Scotland.
James emigrated to Canada, where he enlisted in Victoria, British Columbia, on 11 November 1914, as Private, 77178, 16th Canadian Scottish.
He was killed in action between 4 and 7 September as the battalion held an exposed position on the Pozieres Ridge. The War Diary records ‘401 casualties, 25 per cent of which were killed or are missing’. Another Dundee Canadian, 628044 Pte. Duncan Leslie, a labourer, whose father, James Leslie, lived at 2 Annfield Street, was killed in the same action.
Stewart is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

PROMISING DUNDEE MAN FALLS. WELL-KNOWN FOOTBALLER AND CRICKETER. Private James Stewart, Canadian Infantry, has been killed in action. He was an old Blackness School and Harris Academy boy. After completing his education he entered the Royal Bank, King Street, Dundee, and later was in the West Port branch.
After serving his time in Dundee he went to Canada, and up to the time of enlistment he was employed in the Union Bank of Canada.
Private Stewart was well known in Dundee football circles, having played for various local clubs, while he was also a member of the Watson Cricket Club. He was 28 [sic] years of age, and was a son of the late Mr John Stewart [sic], compositor. A brother is at present assistant burgh surveyor in Calcutta. The Courier, Saturday, 14 October 1916, 4.
